ILLNESS AND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Keeping your child home from school

The school recommends that you keep your child home from school when your child has any of the following symptoms:

  • fever 100o F or greater
  • fever within last 24 hours
  • frequent, hard coughing
  • vomiting within the last 12 hours
  • frequent loose, watery bowel movements (diarrhea)
  • drainage from ears or eyes
  • head lice until adequately treated and nits removed

For general illness, the School recommends that you return your child to school when the following occurs:

  • temperature is normal for the past 24 hours
  • child feels well enough to be in school for the full day
  • no vomiting/loose stools for at least 12 hours
  • Please send a note with your child when they return to school explaining the specific reason (symptoms) for the absence.

STUDENTS ARE EXCLUDED FROM SCHOOL FOR THE FOLLOWING COMMUNICABLE DISEASES:

Strep Throat                 24 hours after prescription antibiotics are started

Conjunctivitis                24 hours after prescription antibiotics are started and all discharge from the eyes is gone (eyes are dry)

Head Lice                    Until the condition no longer exists and nits (eggs) have been removed

Impetigo                       Until adequately treated by a physician and lesions are no longer draining

Ringworm                     Until adequately treated by a physician

Chicken Pox                 Until all lesions are dry (usually at least six days)

Scarlet Fever                24 hours after prescription antibiotics are started

Scabies                        Until adequately treated by a physician

Taking Your Child To The Doctor:

The following are some of the school doctor’s recommendations for seeking health care when your child is ill:

Fever: 

q       q       temperature above 101 degrees F for more than 2 days

q       q       fever with trouble  breathing

q       q       fever with pain in the body, unusually sleepy or irritable

Sore Throat:

q       q       with a fever for more than 2 days

q       q       unable to drink fluids

q       q       increasing Pain

q       q       difficulty swallowing 

Cough:

q       q       lasts longer than 2 weeks

q       q       with complaints of chest pain or difficulty breathing

q       q       it causes choking or vomiting

q       q       if it keeps the child awake at night

q       q       it is made worse with or is caused by exercise

Vomiting/Diarrhea

q       q       lasts more than 24 hours

q       q       with abdominal pain lasting more than 2 hours

q       q       with inability to keep fluids down

Pain

q       q       sudden unexplained onset

q       q       with fever

q       q       with movement and/or swelling

q       q       does not respond to rest or pain increases

q       q       causes the child to wake up at night

Ear/Eye

q       q       pain and/or drainage
